To create the ranking, Money looked only at places with populations of at least 50,000. The publication then eliminated any place that had more than double the national crime risk, less than 85 percent of its state’s median household income, or a lack of ethnic diversity.
Money collected more than 135,000 data points to narrow the list. The publication considered data on economic health, cost of living, public education, diversity, crime, income, ease of living and local amenities. Money partnered with realtor.com to leverage its knowledge of housing markets throughout the U.S.
