The clinic is intended to serve patients who come to the medical center’s emergency department without life threatening conditions. About 40 percent of Lakeland Regional’s ER visits are for conditions classified as primary care, according to the report.

Initially, patients will only be able to use the primary care clinic facilities if they are referred from the Lakeland’s ER. After a referral to the primary care clinic, uninsured and Medicaid patients will be eligible to return for regular appointments. Starting Oct. 1, the clinic will be open to people covered by a county-sponsored healthcare plan who choose the Lakeland Medical Clinic as their primary care provider.
