Covered California exchange expects last-minute surge, extends signup period 4 days

California’s health insurance exchange Covered California extended its open enrollment deadline to Feb. 4 to accommodate a final rush in applications for coverage beginning March 1.

“Experience tells us that people wait until the last day to sign up for health insurance, and we do not want to leave anyone behind,” Covered California Executive Director Peter Lee said. 

Since Nov. 1, 2016, approximately 1.3 million California residents have reenrolled in health plans and 327,000 have signed up for new coverage through Covered California, according to The Sacramento Bee.
