Employee benefit health plans face barriers to telemedicine adoption

Although telemedicine may reduce healthcare costs, there are still barriers to widespread adoption, according to a report by DirectPath and CEB.

The report, titled 2017 Medical Plan Trends and Observations Report, analyzed more than 975 employee benefit health plans to determine trends in employers’ healthcare strategies. A few trends for employers looking to reduce healthcare costs included using price transparency tools, imposing surcharges on spouses and implementing wellness incentives.

Another noteworthy solution to reducing healthcare costs was telemedicine — however, the analysis revealed a few barriers. While more than one-third of organizations offered telemedicine, more than 55 percent of employees were not aware of their availability and almost 60 percent of employees report these programs are not easy to access.
