Here are four takeaways from Rep. Welch’s agenda for the 115th Congress.

1. Rep. Welch wants to require federal officials to use their purchasing power in the Medicare program to negotiate lower drug prices with pharmaceutical companies. To help accomplish this, he has introduced legislation, known as the Medicare Prescription Drug Negotiation Act, according to a news release.

2. Rep. Welch wants to close the “orphan drug” loophole. He plans to reintroduce the Closing Loopholes for Orphan Drugs Act, which would limit the “orphan drug” exclusion to apply only to drugs used to treat rare conditions or diseases, according to the release.

3. Rep. Welch wants to increase consumer access to more affordable generic drugs. He plans to reintroduce the Fair Access for Safe and Timely Generics Act “to increase consumer access to generic drugs, boost market competition and save consumers money,” the release states.

4. Rep. Welch wants to highlight the effectiveness of prescription drugs. He plans to introduce legislation “to require federal regulators to transparently compare the effectiveness of new medications with products already on the market,” according to the release.
