Lawmakers call on Trump to protect healthcare supply chains

A group of House Democrats is urging the Trump administration to shield medical supply chains from recent tariffs, The Hill reported April 9.

Led by Reps. Doris Matsui and Brad Schneider, 26 Democratic lawmakers signed a letter addressed to U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, warning that the administration’s “reckless tariffs” pose serious risks to patients and healthcare providers.

“The supply disruptions for critical medical products will unavoidably hurt U.S. patients, force providers to make impossible rationing decisions and potentially even result in death as treatments are delayed, or more effective medicines and products are swapped for less effective alternatives,” the letter stated.

Although pharmaceuticals were excluded from President Donald Trump’s first round of tariffs, he said during a speech at a National Republican Congressional Committee dinner April 8 that he plans to impose additional tariffs on pharmaceuticals soon.
