Hospitals Begin to Spend More on Equipment

Analysts and major manufactures say equipment sales to hospitals are rising, following widespread spending freezes last year, according to a report by Dow Jones Newswires.

GE Healthcare officials said that the U.S. market for diagnostic imaging equipment is improving, with analysts reporting the most positive numbers in new orders for the company since the third quarter of 2008.

Intuitive Surgical reported selling 110 of its da Vinci surgical robots, costing about $1.4 million each, up from 85 sales a year earlier. Analysts had been expecting about 15 fewer da Vinci sales.

Jefferies & Co. analyst Peter Bye said the two companies’ results “support our checks that U.S. hospital capital-equipment spending has stabilized and trends are improving.”
