FDA OKs aerosol spray to treat GI tract bleeding: 3 things to know

Wilson-Cook Medical on May 7 earned FDA clearance for its product Hemospray, which is designed to help control bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract.

Here are three things to know.

1. Hemospray is an aerosolized spray containing a mineral blend that is applied to the bleeding site in the upper or lower GI tract.

2. The spray, intended for use during endoscopic procedures, can cover large areas, such as ulcers or tumors.

3. During a clinical trial containing 228 patients, Hemospray stopped upper and lower GI bleeding in 95 percent of patients within five minutes of application.
