CT utilization nearly doubles in 10 years: 3 study notes

Between 2013 and 2023, CT imaging utilization within emergency departments increased from 18.7 to 36.5 per 100 Medicare beneficiaries, according to a study published Sept. 30 in Radiology

Here are three notes from the study:

  1. Overall imaging utilization remained stagnant between 2013 and 2023, at 37.3 per 100 Medicare beneficiaries.

  2. Ultrasound utilization increased from 2.3 to 2.8 per 100 Medicare beneficiaries over the 10-year study period.

  3. The increase in CT imaging utilization varied across imaging modalities, with brain and abdominal/pelvis CTs being the most utilized.
