US Cyclospora outbreak tops 205 cases

A Cyclospora infection outbreak, linked to fresh basil, has sickened 205 people across 11 states, according to the CDC.

The number of people sickened has increased by 73 cases in the past three weeks, up from 132 as of July 26. Five people have been hospitalized as a result of the infection.

The outbreak has been linked to fresh basil from Siga Logistics de RL de CV, a company based in Morelos, Mexico. The company recalled its basil products July 24. The FDA warns consumers to avoid basil from this company, and if they cannot determine where the basil is from, to avoid it altogether.

Cyclospora, a parasite, causes an intestinal illness called cyclosporiasis. Common symptoms include diarrhea, frequent bowel movements, stomach cramps and fatigue.
