The Vermont Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports and the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation will provide physicians in the state with free day-passes to give to patients beginning this summer.
The passes are part of a larger state initiative to promote physical activity and help physicians engage with their patients about the importance of exercise, according to the report.
“Studies have demonstrated that outdoor exercise is associated with increased energy and revitalization and decreased depression and tension,” said Elisabeth Fontaine, MD, a gynecologist at Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans, Vt. “The sun also helps to create Vitamin D3, which is important for bone health and metabolic function.”
