Texas lawmakers set aside $55.3M for UT medical school in annual budget proposal

Texas legislators have allocated $55.3 million in funding to the Edinburg-based University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley Medical School under the proposed two-year state funding plan, according to The Monitor.

Ten state House and Senate legislators voted on the final amount around 1:30 a.m. Sunday. The $55.3 million is about $15 million less than the initial $70 million the university had requested.

The House and the Senate had initially budgeted different amounts in funding for the university. A previous Senate budget proposal allocated approximately $12 million in funding, which progressively increased to nearly $25 million. An initial House budget provided roughly $55 million in funds, according to the report.

Lawmakers said funding for UTRGV may change depending on if any special item funding is passed in the final budget, according to the report.

Officials submitted the budget proposal to both legislative bodies this week. It is unclear when a final vote will be issued.
