Mr. Berman became dean of the medical school in 2009. He has worked at Tufts since 1986, when he joined Tufts Health Plan as chief executive. He helped grow the plan from 60,000 members to more than 1 million. He then joined the medical school as chair of the public health and family medicine department in 2003, and eventually became the became the school’s first dean of public health and professional degree programs.
Before Tufts, Mr. Berman was a founding member of the Matthew Thornton Health Plan, an early version of an HMO.
As dean of Tufts medical school, he helped launch the Maine Track Program, a training track for students interested in rural medicine. He also oversaw the development of an anatomy lab with state-of-the-art technology that opened in 2017.
Mr. Berman will continue to work part time at Tufts, helping fundraise for the medical school and university and training new academic leadership.
Peter Bates, vice dean of Tufts medical school, will serve as interim dean.
