Part of APIC’s Strategic Plan 2020, the campaign aims to encourage infection preventionist certification. APIC is promoting legislation in state legislatures that provides criteria for infection preventionists to practice in a hospital setting. The bill would require infection preventionists:

• To pass a nationally accredited organization’s infection prevention and epidemiology exam.
• Be employed as an infection preventionist for one year or more prior to the bill’s passage.

Non-certified infection preventionists would still be able to practice if the legislation is passed and takes effect, per certain conditions, such as the infection preventionist get certified within three years of hire.
