Lawsuit against Louisiana nursing home owner reaches preliminary settlement

Attorneys for Bob Dean, a New Orleans nursing home owner facing a class action lawsuit over the botched evacuation of more than 800 seniors during Hurricane Ida, have reached a preliminary settlement between $12 million and $15 million, Nola reported Aug. 25.

The settlement arrived just a year after the August 2021 hurricane, during which Mr. Dean evacuated residents to a partially-flooded warehouse instead of another nursing facility. The deal won't be approved nor the final amount determined until a hearing with the 24th Judicial District Court Oct. 3. The dollar amount averages about $17,000 per resident, some of whom died after living in squalid conditions in the warehouse for days.

Mr. Dean's nursing homes remain closed and his licenses revoked, but he is fighting to get them back. Mr. Dean is also the center of several criminal charges related to the event.
