Walgreens chief medical officer exits

The chief medical officer of Walgreens Boots Alliance, Kevin Ban, MD, will exit his role as of Nov. 10, a spokesperson confirmed to Becker's.

The move comes on the heels of other shakeups within the company including its Nov. 9 announcement to lay off 5% — 267 members of its staff.

Earlier this year in May, the company also axed 10% of its corporate staff.

Under a newly hired CEO, Walgreens has been seeking to cut costs by $1 billion after losing money in the fourth quarter of last year.

First named the chief medical officer of Walgreens in January 2020. In Oct. 2022, Dr. Ban was promoted and assumed the role as the chief medical officer of the retail pharmacy's holding group, Walgreens Boots Alliance.

Prior to joining Walgreens, Dr. Ban was the chief medical officer at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Needham, Mass.

While the spokesperson did confirm Dr. Ban's departure they did not share any additional details.
