Here are five findings from the Q2 2018 Recall Index report:
1. The pharmaceutical industry saw 77 recalls in the second quarter of this year, marking a 27 percent decrease from the previous quarter.
2. The average recall size was 205,804 — higher than figures seen in seven of the last 11 quarters.
3. Only 3.6 percent of recalls were classified as Class I, the most serious kind, in the second quarter of 2018. This number marks a 42.8 percent decrease from the first quarter of 2018. Most of the recalled units (75.6 percent) were classified as a Class II recall.
4. Failed specifications were the main cause for a recall (23.4 percent), followed by deviations fromCurrent Good Manufacturing Practice regulations (20.8 percent), mislabeling (13 percent) and foreign materials (11.7 percent).
5. Seventy-eight percent of all drug recalls occurred nationwide in the second quarter of 2018.
