UnitedHealthcare in Iowa will take on 215,000 Medicaid members previously covered by AmeriHealth Caritas effective Dec. 1, the Des Moines Register reports.
Here are three things to know.
1. In November, managed care health plan AmeriHealth Caritas Iowa announced it would leave the state's Medicaid program at the end of November.
2. As a result of the exit, UnitedHealthcare gained AmeriHealth Caritas' members and now manages benefits for more than two-thirds of Iowa's Medicaid beneficiaries. The third payer chosen to manage Iowa's Medicaid program, Amerigroup, told state administrators it would not be able to assume any of AmeriHealth Caritas' former members.
3. Iowa's managed care insurers all posted significant financial losses managing the program during its first year, which began in spring 2016.
