UnitedHealth urges judge to drop lawsuit claiming the payer defrauded Medicare $1B+

UnitedHealth Group asked a federal judge to toss a lawsuit filed by the U.S. Justice Department alleging the payer knowingly inflated risk adjustment scores to increase payment, Reuters reports.

Here are three things to know about the lawsuit.

1. UnitedHealth is seeking to end the lawsuit after a federal judge rejected a similar lawsuit against it in October. That lawsuit, filed by the DOJ, alleged the insurer inflated government reimbursement by submitting information that made Medicare Advantage members appear sicker than they were.

2. In a motion filed Friday in Los Angeles federal court, UnitedHealth said the DOJ's lawsuit did not contain any claims the federal government would not have paid the insurer had it known all the facts of the case, Reuters reports.

3. The lawsuit UnitedHealth is asking be dismissed was filed in May.
