The Health Insurance Tax Relief Act, introduced Jan. 17, would delay placing a fee on health insurers’ health policy premiums. The senators argue that the $16 billion tax will increase premiums for their constituents.
Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., said in a news release that “this bipartisan bill will improve our healthcare law and help reduce expensive health insurance premiums.” She added, “I’ll continue to prioritize bipartisan efforts that will decrease premiums, stabilize health insurance markets and provide quality care to every American.”
Sens. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., Doug Jones, D-Ala., John Barrasso, R-Wyo., Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz., and Tim Scott, R-S.C., signed the bill. The bill adds to previous legislative efforts kick-started by members of the group to suspend the tax for 2020.
