No connection between Medicaid expansion, safety-net hospital use, study says

Research across states where Medicaid was expanded and not expanded revealed no difference in safety-net hospitalizations, according to a new study.

Published June 30, researchers drew hospitalization data from 11 expansion states and six nonexpansion states using data from over 60 million discharges from 2012-17.

Between 18.2 million Medicaid or uninsured discharges, the researchers found no indication of a significant difference in hospitalizations between expansion and nonexpansion states.

There was no change in hospitalizations between socioeconomic or racial groups, according to the study. Based on their findings, the researchers claim that expanding insurance coverage alone will not reduce that segregation.
