CMS looks to end 'most favored nations' model with proposed rule

A CMS rule set to be proposed Aug. 10 is seeking to officially end the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation's "most favored nations" model, according to a CMS document

The model would adjust Medicare payment for Part B physician-administered drugs based on the lowest prices of that drug in other countries.

The original model was set to roll out at the start of 2021, but was blocked by a U.S. District Court.

CMS received over 1,100 comments on the model, with many agreeing about its mission to combat prescription drug pricing but also expressing concerns over a Jan. 1, 2021, rollout date, according to the document.
