Centene's ACA exchange, managed care plans boost revenue 7.5%: 4 things to know

While Centene Corp. saw increased revenue in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2017, the health insurer reported a dip in net income.

Here are four things to know about Centene's fourth quarter results.

1. Centene's revenues totaled $12.8 billion in the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31, 2017, up from $11.9 billion in the same period a year prior. The insurer attributed the 7.5 percent increase to growth in its ACA exchange business and expansion of new programs in 2016 and 2017.

2. Centene's managed care membership grew 7 percent year over year to 12.2 million members in the fourth quarter of 2017.

3. At the same time, Centene saw expenses climb 10.8 percent in the fourth quarter of 2017 to $12.6 billion.

4. The insurer's net income fell 11.9 percent in the fourth quarter of 2017 to $230 million, down from $261 million reported in the same period a year prior. Centene ended 2017 with full-year net income of $828 million, up 47.3 percent from fiscal year 2016.
