California health plan hit with discrimination complaint

Gold Coast Health Plan, which administers Medicaid benefits in California, is looking into providing more board meeting information in Spanish and English after facing allegations of discrimination, according to the Ventura County Star.

Roughly 36 percent of Gold Coast's members identify as Spanish-speaking. During a meeting held by the Ventura County Medi-Cal Managed Care Commission in April, a Latino rights advocate requested that Gold Coast's agenda materials be provided in Spanish. Afterward, he filed a discrimination complaint with Gold Coast, citing a lack of information published in Spanish.

Gold Coast CEO Dale Villani said the health insurer follows California Department of Health Care Services regulations, and he refuted the discriminatory claims. Mr. Villani said Gold Coast provides information like member rights and required forms in Spanish within communities that speak mostly Spanish. In addition, he said an interpreter attends commission meetings and agenda meeting items are provided in Spanish when requested, according to the report.
