This year, Fortune named two health insurance executives from Anthem and Aetna to its Most Powerful Women list.
The 2018 edition of Fortune's list comprises seven newcomers, two returnees and CEOs overseeing nearly $1 trillion in market cap.
Anthem CEO Gail Boudreaux returned to the list at No. 5 this year. She took the helm at Anthem in November 2017. In less than a year, stocks for the health insurer, which brings in $90 billion in revenue, are up 45 percent year over year. Under Ms. Boudreaux's leadership, Anthem acquired two health plans, America's 1st Choice and HealthSun, as well as palliative care provider Aspire Health. Ms. Boudreaux previously served as CEO of UnitedHealthcare before leaving in 2014.
Aetna's president, Karen Lynch, also made the list. At No. 15, Ms. Lynch is poised to take on more responsibility as the health insurer nears a $69 billion deal with CVS Health. Should the acquisition close, she will lead the health insurance side of the combined company. Under Ms. Lynch's leadership, Aetna exited its unprofitable ACA business, and shares climbed 25 percent year over year.
