Aetna, Anthem, Cigna signal changes to 2018 ACA exchanges

Three of the nation's largest health insurers are contemplating what their 2018 ACA exchange footprints will look like in light of potential changes to federal regulations and market stability.

Hartford, Conn.-based Aetna's CEO Mark Bertolini said last week the insurer has "no intention" of selling plans on the 2018 ACA exchanges, citing uncertainty about the ACA and a lack of time to submit plan prices by April.

However, in a later interview with CNBC, Mr. Bertolini said Aetna's exchange strategy for next year "will probably be business as usual" in the four states it offers on-exchange plans.

Indianapolis-based Anthem's CEO Joseph Swedish said in an earnings call Wednesday the company is in the process of determining how large its footprint will be in the 2018 exchanges, Reuters reports. Anthem sold on-exchange health plans in 14 states this year.

Bloomfield, Conn.-based Cigna's CEO David Cordani said in an earnings call Thursday the company will "fully assess whether we will participate, where, and how," Reuters reports. Mr. Cordani said the exchanges — which Cigna participated on in seven states this year — will be "fragile at best."
