Salt Lake City-based Intermountain Health plans to build a new 10-story hospital in downtown Salt Lake City to replace the current Intermountain LDS Hospital campus.
The new hospital will include more than 521,000 square feet of hospital space and an attached seven-story medical office building.
Intermountain said it determined that constructing a replacement hospital would provide greater value and flexibility than modernizing the existing LDS Hospital campus after reviewing community health needs, patient trends, facility requirements and long-term growth projections.
“This is a once-in-a-generation investment in the health and well-being of our community,” Ralph Jean-Mary, president of Intermountain Health’s Utah Central Market, said in a Sept. 2 news release. “It will allow us to better serve patients, support our caregivers, embrace innovation and meet the healthcare needs of the community for future generations.”
The new campus will include a full-service emergency department, behavioral health access center, ambulatory surgery center and 24/7 intensive care unit. Additional planned services include imaging, endoscopy, pharmacy, laboratory, dialysis, orthopedics, neurology, cardiology, pulmonary medicine, rehabilitation, gastroenterology, urology and wound care.
Intermountain also plans to strengthen service lines including trauma care, women’s health, cancer care, behavioral health and newborn services. The hospital will feature a Level II neonatal intensive care unit, birthing suites, maternal-fetal medicine and midwifery services.
Intermountain said the project is expected to support about 2,000 jobs and generate more than $1.1 billion in annual local economic impact. The health system did not disclose the projected cost of the project.
Construction planning and site preparation are underway. Intermountain expects to release additional details on project milestones and timelines later this year.
The existing Intermountain LDS Hospital will continue operating as a full-service community hospital while the replacement facility is developed. Intermountain said no final decision has been made regarding the current campus’s long-term use after the new hospital opens.
