Cleveland Clinic has opened two research buildings totaling 300,000 square feet on its main campus, part of what the system calls the largest research investment in its more than 100-year history.
The buildings house more than 700 employees and nearly 30 laboratories and core service areas, according to a Sept. 2 news release from the health system. The northeast building is about 170,000 square feet and holds specialized laboratories and several of the system’s fastest-growing research programs. The northwest building is about 120,000 square feet and is designed for specialty research facilities and core services.
The state of Ohio and JobsOhio supported the project as part of the Cleveland Innovation District, a public-private initiative involving the state, JobsOhio and the city’s healthcare and higher education institutions, the release said. The project was also partially funded through philanthropic gifts.
“These buildings will accelerate scientific discovery while strengthening Cleveland as a destination for healthcare, research and innovation,” Tomislav Mihaljevic, MD, president and CEO of Cleveland Clinic, said in the release.
The facilities include research laboratories, collaborative areas, classrooms, offices and a cafe, along with green space and walking paths that create a new entrance to the southeast section of the main campus.
Cleveland Clinic has created nearly 2,000 jobs tied to the innovation district over the past five years, exceeding a goal of 1,000 full-time equivalent employees, according to the release. In 2023, the system opened 45,000 square feet of remodeled laboratory and computational office space on the main campus as part of an earlier phase of the expansion.
Cleveland Clinic is a 6,725-bed system with 300 outpatient facilities and 83,000 employees, including locations in Ohio, Florida, Nevada, Canada, the United Arab Emirates and England.
