Anthem, Cigna assessing participation in 2018 ACA exchanges: 4 things to know

Indianapolis-based Anthem and Bloomfield, Conn.-based Cigna are contemplating their participation in the 2018 ACA exchanges.

Here are four things to know.

1. Anthem CEO Joseph Swedish said in an earnings call Wednesday the company is in the process of determining how large its footprint will be in the 2018 exchanges, Reuters reports. Mr. Swedish put forth potential short-term changes to stabilize the exchanges, such as tighter enrollment regulations, as Congressional Republicans seek to change the ACA.

2. Anthem sold on-exchange health plans in 14 states this year.

3. Cigna CEO David Cordani said in an earnings call Thursday the company will "fully assess whether we will participate, where, and how" regarding the 2018 exchanges, Reuters reports. Mr. Cordani said the exchanges will be "fragile at best."

4. Cigna is participating in exchanges in seven states this year.
