69% of Medicare beneficiaries want to shop beyond marketplaces

While CMS is taking steps this year to make shopping on insurance marketplaces easier, Medicare beneficiaries are looking for additional ways to shop for coverage, according to a report from eHealth.

The report, which surveyed 6,400 consumers and 15 insurers, found that 69 percent of Medicare beneficiaries want options beside government-run marketplaces to look for and enroll in coverage, according to a Nov. 4 news release on the report.

Over half (54 percent) of respondents said they believe that the government should not hold a monopoly on health insurance enrollment through marketplaces — and 54 percent also said they would support a public option health plan that competed with private insurers.
