4 Key AMA Findings About U.S. Health Insurer Competition

The American Medical Association has found a single health insurance company has a commercial market share of 50 percent or more in 15 states.

The finding was included in a comprehensive AMA  study of competition in commercial health insurance markets across the United States, based on 2011 data. Here are some more key findings.

1. The study found low levels of insurer competition in 71 percent of the metropolitan areas analyzed.

2. The 10 states with the least competitive commercial insurance markets in 2011 are as follows: Alabama, Hawaii, Michigan, Delaware, Alaska, South Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, Louisiana and Rhode Island.

3. Two health insurers had a commercial market share of 50 percent or more in 45 states.

4. The 10 states that experienced the biggest drops in competition from 2010 to 2011 were Louisiana, Idaho, Oklahoma, Iowa, Texas, Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas, Ohio and Arkansas.
