Man dies by suicide in Alabama hospital elevator

A 79-year-old man fatally shot himself at Muscle Shoals, Ala.-based Shoals Hospital Sept. 9, according to WHTN News 19.

Officers from the Muscle Shoals Police Department arrived at the hospital around 6:44 a.m., after receiving a call about a shot fired at the facility, Detective Eric Kelley told WHTN News 19. The shooting triggered a temporary hospital lockdown.

Officers found the body of William Nichols in an elevator on the hospital's fourth.

Police said there were no other victims and confirmed Mr. Nichols did not have any contact with anyone in the hospital that morning.

Shoals Hospital has since resumed normal operations. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
