Nevada city's sole hospital to end labor and delivery services Oct. 1

Mesa View Regional Hospital, the only one in Mesquite, Nev., will stop providing labor and delivery services Oct. 1, according to the Desert Valley Times.

Hospital administrators said their decision to end the services resulted from decreased demand. Mesa View had 63 deliveries in 2017, compared to 236 in 2008.

Once the labor and delivery unit closes, the closest hospitals offering these services will be 42 miles away in St. George, Nev., or about 80 miles away in Las Vegas.

"The physicians and staff have worked extremely hard over the last several years to build a strong, viable OB program, but with historically declining volumes, the demand is simply not there," Mesa View CEO Ned Hill told Desert Valley Times. "This has been a very difficult decision, but we are confident it is the right one. Discontinuing elective deliveries will allow our hospital to continue building up the services most needed in our community."

The hospital still will offer prenatal and postpartum care, outpatient obstetrical services, gynecological services and other women's health services.
