Residents in the Gunderson Tri-County Care Center, a long-term care facility in the hospital, also were evacuated.

An unknown number of hospital patients and 29 long-term care residents were initially moved to other locations inside the facility but were later taken to other facilities in the area due to the smoke.

The fire likely started in a heating unit of the care center, hospital administrators said.

A Gunderson spokesperson told WXOW that care center residents were expected to move back Thursday afternoon or Friday morning, after the building is deemed safe.

There were no injuries reported. The hospital’s emergency room is open.
