After weeklong disruption, Aspen Valley Hospital lifts suspension of elective surgeries

Aspen (Colo.) Valley Hospital lifted its suspension of elective surgeries after problems with the facility’s sterilization process created a nearly weeklong disruption, reports The Aspen Times.

The hospital suspended surgeries the evening of Jan. 25, after discovering a number of its surgical packs had problematic moisture levels. The problem was attributed to a mechanical issue with the hospital’s steam sterilization process. Aspen Valley Hospital still performed emergent surgeries with a reserve of unaffected surgical packs.

Around 3 p.m. Feb. 1, the hospital resolved the steam sterilization issue and received clearance to resume all surgeries.

“We’re actually somewhat giddy,” Aspen Valley Hospital CEO David Ressler told The Aspen Times, adding that “we had people here around the clock,” working to resolve the issue.

According to Mr. Ressler, the hospital’s revenue was not significantly impacted.
