50 Physician-Owned Hospitals to Know

Becker's Hospital Review has named 50 physician-owned hospitals to know in America. The Becker's Hospital Review editorial team selected these based on patient safety, patient satisfaction and overall quality ratings from recognized healthcare rating resources, and the list has been vetted by several industry experts. Note: All hospitals listed have at least partial ownership by a physician(s) and are listed in alphabetical order.

Animas Surgical Hospital (Durango, Colo.).
This 12-bed, multispecialty surgical hospital, which is partnered with Symbion Healthcare, opened in 2004 and received the Prostatectomy Excellence Award from HealthGrades in 2011. Consumer Reports also named Animas the top hospital in Colorado based on data from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey. Animas Founder and CEO Brett Gosney is the immediate past president of the Physician Hospitals of America.

Arizona Spine & Joint Hospital (Mesa, Ariz.). The 23-bed Arizona Spine & Joint Hospital was established in 2003 to provide a progressive and innovative approach to orthopedics, spine and podiatry surgeries. HealthGrades has recognized the hospital with joint replacement and spine surgery excellence awards for 2011, and it also awarded Arizona Spine & Joint with five-star ratings in back and neck surgeries as well as total hip and total knee replacements.

Arkansas Surgical Hospital (North Little Rock, Ark.). Arkansas Surgical Hospital received five different awards from HealthGrades in 2011. It is ranked as the best hospital in Arkansas for both orthopedic surgery as well as spine surgery, and it is also five-star rated for total knee replacement, total hip replacement and spine surgery (including fusion). According to the Delta Group's CareChex ratings, the 51-bed hospital also ranked in the top one percent in the nation in overall surgical care, major orthopedic surgery, spine surgery, patient safety and patient satisfaction.

Aurora BayCare Medical Center (Green Bay, Wis.). Aurora BayCare Medical Center is a joint venture of Aurora Health Care and BayCare Clinic, the largest physician-owned specialty clinic in northeast Wisconsin. With an average emergency department response three times faster than the national average, the 167-bed Aurora BayCare was the first hospital in the country to be designated as an Emergency Center of Excellence by Emergency Excellence, a benchmarking organization. Thomson Reuters also named Aurora BayCare as one of America's Top 50 Cardiovascular Hospitals for 2011, the only hospital in Wisconsin to earn that recognition.

Avera Heart Hospital of South Dakota (Sioux Falls). For five years in a row, the 55-bed Avera Heart Hospital of South Dakota has been designated as one of the nation's Top 50 Cardiovascular Hospitals by Thomson Reuters. The Avera Heart Hospital, the region's first and only hospital dedicated solely to the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease, also ranked eighth in the United States for overall hospital care, according CareChex's 2011 ratings. For overall surgical care in this year's CareChex rankings, the hospital ranked fifth, and it also ranked second for coronary bypass surgery.

Baylor Jack and Jane Hamilton Heart and Vascular Center (Dallas). Since the Baylor Jack and Jane Hamilton Heart and Vascular Center opened in 2002, it has received numerous awards, highlighting its efforts dedicated to the care and treatment of heart and vascular patients. Recipient of the 2010 Press Ganey Summit Award, the 64-bed hospital had a 17.9 readmission rate for congestive heart failure patients (compared with national average of 25.4 percent), the lowest rate in the nation for two straight years. The Baylor Heart and Vascular Center is also a Magnet Hospital, an organization providing nursing excellence as awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. It has received awards from HealthGrades for outstanding patient experience and vascular surgery excellence and is ranked as one of the top heart and vascular hospitals in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

Black Hills Surgical Hospital (Rapid City, S.D.). Black Hills Surgical Hospital, which is partnered with Medical Facilities Corporation, specializes in a wide array services, including neurosurgery, orthopedics and bariatrics. In 2011, HealthGrades awarded Black Hills Surgical with the Spine Surgery Excellence Award, and the hospital continues to receive five-star ratings on its spinal fusion surgery as well as total knee replacement. The CareChex ratings for 2011 also ranked the 26-bed Black Hills Surgical within the top 50 of all U.S. hospitals for overall hospital care.

The Center for Spinal Surgery (Nashville, Tenn.). The Center for Spinal Surgery is renowned across the country for its spine surgeries, as HealthGrades has awarded the hospital the Spine Surgery Excellence Award and a five-star rating in back and neck surgery except spinal fusion for the past three years. CareChex also rated The Center for Spinal Surgery as the number one hospital in the country for quality in spinal fusion and overall spinal surgery. The 23-bed hospital was rated number one out of 82 hospitals in Tennessee for its high level of patient satisfaction and outcomes by Consumer Reports.

Doctors Hospital at Renaissance (Edinburg, Texas). The 503-bed acute-care Doctors Hospital at Renaissance is one of the largest physician-owned hospitals in the country, and within 2011 alone, it has racked up numerous accolades. HealthGrades gave DHR the Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence, the Spine Surgery Excellence Award and four other service line awards. The hospital, which has also been named a Thomson Reuters Top 100 Hospital, specializes in numerous services ranging from cardiovascular specialties to spine and general women's health.

El Paso (Texas) Specialty Hospital. El Paso Specialty Hospital is surgical facility specializing in three main services: orthopedics, joint replacement and spine. The 31-bed hospital was recently named Best Specialty Hospital in the Nation by the American Surgical Hospital Association. From 2005 to 2009, HealthGrades rated it within the top five percent of hospitals in the nation for total hip and knee joint replacement, and it also received HealthGrades' Joint Replacement Excellence Award in 2010 and 2011.

Foundation Surgical Hospital (Bellaire, Texas). The 64-bed Foundation Surgical Hospital is a state-of-the-art specialty orthopedic and neuro-spine facility with a proven track record in patient quality and satisfaction. For the past three years, HealthGrades awarded FSH the Outstanding Patient Experience Award. It also received a 2011 Joint Replacement Excellence Award and is five-star rated in total hip and knee replacement. FSH is the only hospital in Texas ranked in the top five percent in both patient experience and joint replacement.

Harlingen (Texas) Medical Center. Harlingen Medical Center, established in 2002, is a 112-bed hospital led by physicians who specialize in cardiology, orthopedics, gastroenterology, bariatrics, obstetrics, gynecology and emergency care. Named among the Thomson Reuters Top 100 Cardiovascular Hospitals in 2008 and 2009, it received the Women's Health Excellence Award, Emergency Medicine Excellence Award, Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence and four other service line awards from HealthGrades for 2011. HMC is also five-star rated in spinal fusion surgery, hip fracture repair and women's health.

THE HEART HOSPITAL Baylor Plano (Texas). For two years in a row, the 116-bed hospital has received the Press Ganey Summit Award, ranking above the 95th percentile for inpatient and emergency department satisfaction. The average door-to-physician time is less than eight minutes at the hospital. THE HEART HOSPITAL Baylor Plano, the first and only freestanding, full-service hospital in the region dedicated solely to heart and vascular healthcare, was also recognized by U.S. News & World Report in its "Top 100 Hospitals" and achieved Magnet Hospital recognition this past year.

Heartland Surgical Specialty Hospital (Overland Park, Kan.). Previously known as the Heartland Spine and Specialty Hospital, the 48-bed Heartland Surgical Specialty Hospital serves the Overland Park area. Focusing on spine, orthopedic, bariatric, neurosurgery and other specialty surgeries, Heartland won the 2010 Press Ganey Summit Award, highlighting its high level of customer satisfaction for the past three-plus years. HealthGrades also designated Heartland as a five-star rated facility in its back and neck spinal fusion surgery.

Indiana Orthopaedic Hospital (Indianapolis). Owned by the physicians of OrthoIndy, the 42-bed Indiana Orthopaedic Hospital opened in 2005 to provide focused orthopedic and spine care. IOH has been recognized as a five-star hospital by HealthGrades in joint replacement and total knee replacement. The hospital received the Joint Replacement Excellence Award from HealthGrades from 2007 to 2010 and was named among the top five hospitals in Indiana for joint replacement and spine surgery. It also received the 2010 Press Ganey Summit Award for patient satisfaction and ranked in the top 50 of all U.S. hospitals for overall hospital care and joint replacement for 2011 by the CareChex rating service.

Institute for Orthopaedic Surgery (Lima, Ohio). Focusing on orthopedic and musculoskeletal needs of patients and their families, the 12-bed Institute of Orthopaedic Surgery received the 2011 Joint Replacement Excellence Award from HealthGrades and is also five-star rated for total hip and knee replacement. CareChex ratings also ranked IOS as one of the top 50 hospitals in the United States for overall hospital care. The hospital's patient satisfaction scores on the HCAHPS have consistently ranked it in the 99th percentile of all hospitals for the past three years.

Jack Hughston Memorial Hospital (Phenix City, Ala.). Located in Phenix City, Ala., Jack Hughston Memorial Hospital is an advanced acute-care hospital offering a wide range of services, including surgical suites for inpatient and ambulatory surgery, diagnostic imaging, orthopedic and cardiopulmonary services. Recipient of the HealthGrades Outstanding Patient Experience Award, Jack Hughston Memorial Hospital has 66 beds and was ranked by HealthGrades as the best in patient outcomes for overall orthopedic services in the Georgia-Alabama region for 2011.

Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute (Leawood, Kan.). Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute is a strategic alliance between the Dickson-Diveley Midwest Orthopaedic Clinic, Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Consultants and Clinic of Kansas City and Saint Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. The nine-bed specialty hospital received the Joint Replacement Excellence Award from HealthGrades in both 2010 and 2011, and roughly 93 percent of patients would recommend KCOI to friends and family according to HCAHPS results.

Kansas Spine Hospital (Wichita, Kan.). Founded in 2003, this 38-bed hospital was the first fully digital hospital in Kansas and first facility within the surrounding seven-state area to offer a 3-tesla MRI and a 16-slice CT scanner. Specializing in back and neck surgery, radiology and pain management, several of the physicians at Kansas Spine Hospital have been recognized for their work by HealthGrades.

Lafayette (La.) Surgical Specialty Hospital. Lafayette Surgical Specialty Hospital was built in 2004, and the 20-bed facility has eight operating rooms and two procedure rooms to accommodate 8,000 total cases per year. The hospital's patient satisfaction rates have consistently reached 98 percent and higher, and from 2007 to 2010, it was honored by the Louisiana Nurses Foundation as "Hospital of the Year" for Louisiana hospitals with 20 beds or less.

Lewis & Clark Specialty Hospital (Yankton, S.D.). Founded in 2002 by local physicians, the six-bed Lewis & Clark Specialty Hospital offers services in orthopedics, urology, podiatry and more. HealthGrades awarded Lewis & Clark a five-star rating in spinal fusion surgery and also high patient safety indicators in respiratory failure following surgeries and deep blood clots in the lungs or legs following surgery. The hospital recently completed a $4.5 million diagnostic imaging suite and is set to complete a new 26,000-square-foot medical office building in July 2012.

Louisiana Medical Center and Heart Hospital (Lacombe, La.). For years, Louisiana Medical Center and Heart Hospital has been known for its cardiac care and treatment of heart disease in Louisiana's North Shore region. Thomson Reuters named it one of the nation's top 100 hospitals for cardiovascular care in 2008, and it was the inaugural recipient of the "Louisiana Quality Award" in 2005 by Louisiana Health Care Review. In 2007, the 137-bed Louisiana Medical Center and Heart Hospital received the Platinum Hospital Quality Award from eQHealth Solutions. The hospital is also known for its treatment of disease and injury that affects the spine, as HealthGrades gave it a five-star rating for spinal fusion surgery. The hospital was also awarded a HealthGrades 2011 Outstanding Patient Experience Award.

Lubbock (Texas) Heart Hospital. Lubbock Heart Hospital is a 74-bed heart specialty center that opened in 2003 and has been awarded for cardiovascular services, ranging from cardiac surgery to coronary interventions. Lubbock Heart Hospital has been rated by HealthGrades as the best in the Lubbock region for overall cardiac services for five years in a row and is one of the top 10 hospitals in Texas for overall cardiac and cardiology services. Additionally, the hospital has been five-star rated in heart failure treatment for six straight years, and in 2011, HealthGrades awarded it a Women's Health Excellence Award as well as an Outstanding Patient Experience Award.

McBride Orthopedic Hospital (Oklahoma City). Founded in 1919 by Earl McBride, MD, the 78-bed McBride Orthopedic Hospital has seen itself in several different venues but still ranks as the number one hospital in Oklahoma for joint replacement by HealthGrades. Focusing on several orthopedic surgeries, rehabilitation services and diagnostic imaging, McBride has ranked in the top five percent in the nation for overall orthopedic services and joint replacement and has earned HealthGrades' five-star ratings for total knee replacement and hip fracture repair for four years in a row.

McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center (Springfield, Ore.). In 1949, periodic flooding of the Willamette River would sometimes block access to the area's only hospital, located in Eugene, Ore. So, in 1955, McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center opened with 35 beds to give healthcare access to local residents. It has since expanded to a 114-bed medical center. McKenzie-Willamette is known for its cardiac services, as HealthGrades awarded the hospital with the Cardiac Care Excellence Award and Coronary Intervention Excellence Award for 2011. It is also five-star rated in angioplasty/stent procedures as well as heart attack. Based on its reporting to CMS, it is among the highest in the country when relating to adherence to care measures involving heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia and heart surgical care.

Midwest Surgical Hospital (Omaha, Neb.). The 19-bed Midwest Surgical Hospital, partnered with Surgical Management Professionals, opened in 2008 to provide orthopedic, neurosurgical and other pain management services to the Omaha area. HealthGrades gave the hospital a five-star rating in spinal fusion for the back and neck, and Midwest Surgical was also named as the 12th most beautiful hospital in the country according to a Soliant Health survey.

Mountain View Regional Hospital (Casper, Wyo.). Mountain View Regional Hospital is a 23-bed hospital that focuses on pain management, orthopedic surgery, bariatric surgery, imaging and neurosurgery. Despite opening only three years ago, Mountain View Regional Hospital has received numerous awards, including HealthGrades' 2011 Spine Surgery Excellence Award as well as the Mountain-Pacific Quality Health Award, which highlights successful efforts in demonstrating improvement in the quality of patient care. Additionally, HealthGrades awarded it a five-star rating in spinal fusion surgery.

Mountain Vista Medical Center (Mesa, Ariz.). Heart care is at the center of the 178-bed Mountain Vista Medical Center. Mountain Vista has a comprehensive heart care program and advanced technology for cardiac catheterization, cardiovascular surgery and cardiac rehabilitation. HealthGrades awarded the hospital with its 2011 Pulmonary Care Excellence Award, along with a five-star rating in the treatment of heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and pneumonia. In 2010, it was in the top 10 percent in the nation for cardiac care and recently received Det Norske Veritas primary stroke certification, which is an accreditation that shows a hospital's commitment to excellence in stroke treatment.

Nebraska Orthopaedic Hospital (Omaha, Neb.). Nebraska Orthopaedic Hospital opened in 2004 as the region's first hospital dedicated to orthopedic care, and it specializes in the diagnostic, surgical and rehabilitative needs of patients with musculoskeletal conditions. In U.S. News & World Report's 2011-12 Best Hospitals rankings, the 24-bed Nebraska Orthopaedic Hospital ranked 38th in the United States for orthopedics (one of only two physician-owned hospitals to make the top 50 in that category) and as the number one overall hospital in the Omaha/Council Bluffs metropolitan area.

North Carolina Specialty Hospital (Durham, N.C.). North Carolina Specialty Hospital was originally founded as McPherson Hospital in 1926. The 18-bed medical center has a 4-to-1 patient-to-registered nurse ratio and focuses on specialties such as orthopedics, ophthalmology, gynecology, sports medicine and others. It recently received HealthGrades' 2011 awards for joint replacement and spine surgery excellence, and it also received five-star ratings in total hip replacement, total knee replacement and back and neck surgery. It also holds the number one ranking in North Carolina for HCAHPS patient satisfaction for 2009 and 2010 with scores in low-to-mid 90s.

Oklahoma Heart Hospital (Oklahoma City). The 99-bed Oklahoma Heart Hospital opened in 2002 as the first all-digital hospital in the country and focuses exclusively on preventing and treating cardiovascular disease. For four straight years, Oklahoma Heart Hospital has received the Press Ganey Summit Award for inpatient care, and according to U.S. News & World Report, the hospital has some of the highest patient satisfaction ratings in the country, as 99 percent of patients would recommend the hospital to others. Additionally, the Oklahoma Heart Hospital was named one of the "most wired" hospitals in the nation, according to the 2011 Most Wired Survey. Five-star ratings in coronary interventional procedures and heart failure treatment from HealthGrades also adorn the hospital's list of cardiac-based accolades.

Oklahoma Spine Hospital (Oklahoma City). The 62,000-square-foot Oklahoma Spine Hospital, part of Medical Facilities Corporation, is one of the nation's first physician-owned specialty surgical spine hospitals. With 18 beds and five operating rooms, the Oklahoma Spine Hospital was rated by CareChex as one of the top 20 hospitals in the country for quality in spinal fusion and overall spine surgery in 2011. HealthGrades ranked the hospital within the top five percent of the nation for spine surgery excellence, including five-star ratings for back and neck surgery. Oklahoma Spine Hospital also received the 2010 Press Ganey Summit Award for high inpatient satisfaction.

Oklahoma Surgical Hospital (Tulsa, Okla.). Originally the Orthopedic Hospital of Oklahoma, the 76-bed Oklahoma Surgical Hospital was established in 2001 to provide inpatient and outpatient services for several surgical procedures, including orthopedics, neurosurgery, urology, ENT and others. Recipient of the HealthGrades Spine Surgery Excellence Award in 2011, Oklahoma Surgical hospital was also ranked as a top 50 hospital in the nation for orthopedic care and major orthopedic surgery by CareChex.

Orthopaedic Hospital of Wisconsin (Glendale, Wis.). Surgeons at the 30-bed, 95,000-square-foot, physician-owned Orthopaedic Hospital of Wisconsin perform more than 575 orthopedic and spine surgeries each month. The hospital has been recognized with Press Ganey's 2010 Summit Award for high patient satisfaction in the inpatient unit, and in 2009, the hospital constructed a new facility that received the 2010 National Design-Build Award.

Parkview Orthopedic Hospital (Fort Wayne, Ind.). Parkview Orthopedic Hospital, the first specialty hospital in northeastern Indiana devoted to orthopedic surgery and post-surgery patient care, has 36 inpatient beds, and its surgeons perform a range of orthopedic and spine procedures, including total hip and knee replacements and minimally invasive spine surgery. The hospital is ranked in the 95th percentile for patient satisfaction from Professional Research Consultants and is one of the top-ranked hospitals most likely to be recommended by patients in Indiana, as reported by HCAHPS. HealthGrades awarded Parkview Orthopedic Hospital with the 2011 Joint Replacement Excellence Award along with a five-star rating in both total knee and total hip replacement.

The Physicians Centre Hospital (Bryan, Texas). With 16 beds, six operating rooms and numerous diagnostic imaging devices, The Physicians Centre Hospital is known for its joint replacement and gynecologic surgery excellence, as designated by HealthGrades. The Physicians Centre Hospital was also recently named as the number three hospital in Texas by Consumer Reports rankings for patient satisfaction.

Pine Creek Medical Center (Dallas).
Offering almost 30 services, including bariatrics and orthopedic spine surgery, the 18-bed Pine Creek Medical Center is a fully digital hospital that also houses a digital "smart operating room," which allows nurses to monitor and control several devices and imaging technologies from a central nurse's station. HealthGrades awarded the hospital its Bariatric Surgery Excellence Award in 2011.

Pinnacle Hospital (Crown Point, Ind.). Pinnacle Hospital, which opened in 2007, is a partnership between primary care physicians, surgeons and other specialists housed in a 18-bed, 63,000-square-foot facility. It contains the Indiana Breast Center, which has helped diagnose and detect breast cancer through various advanced diagnostic and therapeutic technologies. Pinnacle Hospital also offers unique patient amenities with free Wi-Fi Internet and access to e-books.

Quail Creek Surgical Hospital (Amarillo, Texas). Quail Creek Surgical Hospital is part of Physicians Surgical Hospitals in Amarillo, Texas. HealthGrades awarded the 32-bed Quail Creek with the Joint Replacement Excellence, Spine Surgery Excellence and Gynecologic Surgery Excellence awards in 2011 as well as five-star ratings for total hip and knee replacements and back and neck surgery. According to HCAHPS data, the hospital also showed that nearly 91 percent of its patients would refer the hospital to family and friends, and its 2010 Press Ganey Summit Award reinforced the hospital's patient satisfaction in the inpatient setting.

Salt Lake Regional Medical Center (Salt Lake City). The 118-bed Salt Lake Regional Medical Center has been a foundational healthcare facility in the Salt Lake area for the past several years, focusing on heart and cancer care among other specialties. HealthGrades ranked the hospital number one in all of Utah for cardiology services, overall cardiac services and coronary interventional procedures in 2011. Salt Lake Regional Medical Center has also been a five-star rated hospital, according to HealthGrades, for coronary interventional procedures for the past three years and for treatment of heart failure for the past two years. U.S. News & World Report qualified the hospital as a high-performing facility in both cancer and ear, nose and throat surgery and ranked it number five of all hospitals in the Salt Lake City region.

Sioux Falls (S.D.) Surgical Hospital. Sioux Falls Surgical Hospital, which is partnered with Medical Facilities Corporation and Surgical Management Professionals, opened in 1985 and provides a wide range of surgical services, including orthopedics, radiology, urology and more. From 2007 to 2010, the 35-bed Sioux Falls Surgical Hospital was rated a five-star facility by HealthGrades for its total knee replacement procedures, and this past year, it became five-star rated for its total hip replacement procedures. The CareChex rating system ranked the hospital within the top 100 for overall hospital care and within the top 50 for overall surgical care.

South Texas Spine & Surgical Hospital (San Antonio). South Texas Spine & Surgical Hospital is a 30-bed facility specializing in orthopedic, spine and pain management procedures. HealthGrades ranked the hospital as a five-star facility for total knee replacement in 2011, and the hospital earns high marks in patient satisfaction as roughly 92 percent of patients would recommend the hospital services to others while 90 percent gave the hospital the highest or very high overall ratings.

St. Vincent Heart Center of Indiana (Indianapolis). St. Vincent Heart Center of Indiana provides advanced and specialized cardiovascular care within the Indianapolis community. Since 2006, the 107-bed hospital has received the Cardiac Care Excellence Award from HealthGrades every year, and in 2009, Thomson Reuters recognized St. Vincent Heart Center of Indiana as one of the top 100 cardiovascular hospitals in the country. It received the Press Ganey Summit Award in 2010, was ranked in the top 15 hospitals in the country by the CareChex ratings for hospital quality coronary bypass surgery and was considered to be a high-performing facility in cardiology and heart surgery and geriatrics by U.S. News & World Report.

Stanislaus Surgical Hospital (Modesto, Calif.). Originally an ambulatory surgical center, Stanislaus Surgical Hospital converted to a physician-owned, acute-care hospital and was licensed in 2000 with 23 beds. In 2011, HealthGrades recognized SSH with excellence awards in gynecologic surgery and joint replacement. With five-star ratings in back and neck surgery except spinal fusion and total hip and knee replacement from HealthGrades, SSH also had the highest ratings in knee replacement, hip replacements and neuro surgical procedures according to Consumer Reports' 2010 survey.

Texas Health Center for Diagnostics & Surgery (Plano, Texas). Named as one of the best companies to work for in Texas in 2011, Texas Health Center for Diagnostics & Surgery provides a variety of specialty services, ranging from neurosurgery to different types of cancer surgeries, as well as several advanced imaging procedures. Physicians perform more than 12,000 surgical procedures every year, and HealthGrades awarded the 18-bed hospital with a 2011 Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award.

Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Southlake (Texas). The Southlake Journal recently voted Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Southlake's emergency room as the best in the region, and according to U.S. News & World Report, patient satisfaction is rated just as highly, as roughly 90 percent of patients would recommend the hospital to family and friends. HealthGrades also recognized the 16-bed facility as a five-star rated hospital in both total hip and total knee replacement and awarded it a 2011 Joint Replacement Excellence Award.

Texas Orthopedic Hospital (Houston). Texas Orthopedic Hospital opened in 1995, and for the past three years, it has received some of the highest recognitions for its work in orthopedic care. Texas Orthopedic Hospital has been ranked as one of the Top 50 Hospitals in the country in orthopedics from 2009 to 2011 according to U.S. News & World Report, and this year, it was ranked as the fifth-highest rated hospital in the Houston metro area and 26th in the nation. HealthGrades awarded the 49-bed hospital with a Pediatric Patient Safety Excellence Award in 2010, and it continues to be among the top five percent in the United States for joint replacement and spine surgery according to HealthGrades.

Texas Spine & Joint Hospital (Tyler, Texas). Texas Spine & Joint Hospital is considered to be one of the top spine surgeries sites in the state of Texas. HealthGrades ranked the 20-bed Texas Spine & Joint Hospital as the top hospital for spine surgery in 2009 and recently received a Spine Surgery Excellence Award for 2011. The hospital's surgical infection rate is also below one percent.

Tulsa (Okla.) Spine & Specialty Hospital. Founded in 2002, Tulsa Spine & Specialty Hospital specializes in surgical services, diagnostic imaging and pain management. The 2011 CareChex ratings labeled the hospital as the second-best hospital in the country in spinal surgery, and HealthGrades ranked it as the top hospital in Oklahoma for spine surgery in 2010. For the past two years, HealthGrades has ranked Tulsa Spine & Specialty Hospital as among the top five percent in the nation for spine surgery along with a five-star rating in spine surgery and back and neck surgery. According to HCAHPS survey results, the 37-bed hospital also ranks in the top 10 percent in the country for patient satisfaction.

Woodland Heights Medical Center (Lufkin, Texas). Woodland Heights Medical Center was established in 1918 and offers a range of services, including orthopedics and vascular surgery. HealthGrades gave Woodland Heights five-star ratings in coronary interventional procedures, appendectomies, respiratory failure treatment, pulmonary embolism treatment and gastrointestinal surgeries and procedures. The 149-bed hospital also received awards for excellence in critical care and coronary intervention, and in 2010, Forbes labeled it among the top five percent of hospitals nationally for low mortality and complication rates.
