Virginia requires insurers to count drug copay coupons toward deductibles

Virginia became the first state in the nation to require insurers to count drugmaker copay coupons toward deductibles and catastrophic coverage, according to Inside Health Policy.

The copay cards and coupons were provided to patients by drugmakers to help patients lower their out-of-pocket costs, but insurers counteracted with practices aimed to discourage patients from using the discounts, telling them they wouldn’t count the value of copay assistance toward their deductibles or out-of-pocket costs.

Virginia Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam signed a  bill that protects consumers from the insurer practices into law March 25.
