Medical supplier sentenced for $1.7M fraud scheme

A federal court sentenced the owner of a Texas medical supply company to 60 months in prison after she pleaded guilty to a healthcare fraud scheme, the Justice Department said Dec. 2.

Edelmira Marquez, 59, engaged in a scheme to bill Medicare and Medicare for high-value items while substituting lesser-value items to patients through her El Paso-based company, Marquez Medical Supply. Most of the suppliers were related to continence care, including adult diapers, wipes and bed liners. 

Ms. Marquez was fined $20,000 and ordered to pay $1.7 million in restitution to Medicaid.
