The House drafted the bills in response to a series of videos released earlier this summer by The Center for Medical Progress. Several of the videos contained footage from private meetings and events, where officials discussed fees for procuring fetal tissue for medical researchers.
Congress’ contentious debate over the funding of Planned Parenthood may stall a bill to fund the government before it runs out of money on Oct. 1.
The bill to defund Planned Parenthood was approved in a 241 to 187 vote with the support of two Democrats. The bill is expected to pass the Senate if Majority Leader Mitch McConnell raises it for a vote, but President Barack Obama said he would veto the legislation.
Defunding Planned Parenthood would eliminate about $255 million in federal funds, according to the Congressional Budget Office. The CBO estimated that cutting Planned Parenthood’s funding would limit access to care for approximately 650,000 women.
