Hospital Provider-Fee Bill Advances in Colorado State House

The Colorado State House granted preliminary approval to a bill that would give hospitals hundreds of millions of dollars of federal matching funds to help up to 200,000 uninsured Coloradoans, according to a report by the Denver Business Journal.

House Bill 1293 would impose a provider fee tax on hospitals, which would generate $1.2 billion for the state’s healthcare system. Representative Jim Riesberg (D-Greeley), who sponsored the bill, said that the provider fee should cost hospitals no more than 3 percent of their total revenue.

The bill has the support of the Colorado Hospital Association, doctor groups, business leaders and consumer advocates; however, some legislators are afraid that the fee would shift back to consumers, especially in affluent areas that would not benefit the most from federal matching dollars.
