Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said the GOP would agree to lifting the debt limit, but only if paired with the sustainability of long-term expense reductions.
“It’s a shame we have to use whatever leverage we have in Congress to get the president to deal with the biggest problem confronting our future, and that’s our excessive spending,” Sen. McConnell said in the report.
President Barack Obama and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) have both said the urgency of the debt ceiling debate means it should be made separate from spending legislation discussions.
