Florida's surgeon general on Feb. 1 restricted the medical license of a Jacksonville-based infectious disease specialist accused of masturbating during a patient exam.
Here are four things to know.
1. A male patient accused Om Kapoor, MD, of masturbating into a napkin while examining his buttocks and genitals on Dec. 14, 2017, at Jacksonville-based Baptist Medical Center. The patient allegedly confronted Dr. Kapoor during the examination and took the discarded napkin to the police, who charged the physician with exposure of sexual organs and battery on Dec. 20, 2017.
2. Under the license restriction, Dr. Kapoor can only see male patients if another licensed physician is in the room.
"Dr. Kapoor's conduct of masturbating and ejaculating on a patient was so brazen and with such a wanton disregard for the laws and rules regulating the practice of medicine, that any male patient that presents to Dr. Kapoor for any purpose, is in danger of harm within the confines of the examination room," said a state report on the emergency restriction signed by Florida Surgeon General Celeste Phillip, MD.
3. In a statement to Becker's Hospital Review in December, Baptist Health said, "We take seriously any allegations, especially charges of this nature, filed against physicians on the medical staffs of Baptist Health hospitals. We are cooperating with the police investigation regarding the allegations. Dr. Kapoor is on a leave of absence pending investigation."
4. On Friday, Baptist Health confirmed to Becker's that Dr. Kapoor remains on leave of absence.
