Beebe Medical Center's Class Action Settlement Expected to Top $100M

Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, Del., has reached a settlement exceeding $100 million to resolve a class action lawsuit filed by patients who received care from a pediatrician who was a pedophile, according to a Daily Times report.

Financial details are currently confidential, but sources have told news outlets the settlement will be more than $100 million. An attorney for the plaintiffs says the settlement is done while Beebe's attorney said nonfinancial matters still need to be resolved, according to the report. Beebe's attorney also said the hospital will avoid bankruptcy with the settlement.

The lawsuit accused Beebe of negligence and dereliction of duty. After receiving complaints that Earl B. Bradley, MD, delivered inappropriate care to young girls, the hospital cleared the physician of any wrongdoing and allowed him to keep his privileges to treat patients after he resigned as an employee and until he was arrested in December 2009.

Dr. Bradley was convicted in August 2011 of raping or abusing 86 patients.
