The physician was one of the hospital’s two urologists. To ensure patient services are not affected by the changes, some nurses may be asked to add more clinical duties to their schedules, according to the report.
“We’re focusing on reducing costs and maintaining quality. We’re eliminating positions that…were budgeted but not filled,” a hospital spokeswoman told West Hawaii Today.
Hilo Medical Center is facing a $9 million shortfall, which led to the staff cuts. To further reduce costs, the hospital is also holding off on some capital projects, according to the report.
