Hospitals and unions: 8 recent conflicts, agreements

Becker's Hospital Review reported the following hospital-union events in January.

1. Nurses and Santa Clara County in California approved a new contract agreement.

2. Nurses and other healthcare workers at Swedish Medical Center sites in the Seattle area are moving forward with a strike.

3. Healthcare workers at Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton, Mass., approved a new three-year contract agreement.

4. Nurses at MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa, authorized their bargaining committee to call a strike and rejected MercyOne's most recent contract offer.

5. Albany (N.Y.) Medical Center seeks to dismiss a union lawsuit accusing the hospital of federal human trafficking law violations linked to its program to recruit nurses from the Philippines to work in the hospital.

6. Workers at three Providence hospitals in Washington state reached tentative agreements Jan. 8 with hospital management.

7. Registered nurses filed an opposition in bankruptcy court alleging that Verity Health System is failing to follow California laws regarding its plans to close a 366-bed Los Angeles hospital. 

8. Nurses at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, Wash., reached a tentative agreement with hospital management.
