8,500 nurses reach labor deal with NYC Health, city agencies

The union representing more than 8,500 nurses with the NYC Health + Hospitals system and New York City agencies has reached a contract agreement with the city.

In a news release, Mayor Bill de Blasio's office said the agreement — between the New York State Nurses Association and the city — includes compounded wage increases of 2 percent, 2.25 percent, 0.25 percent and 3 percent over nearly 45 months.

It also includes changes in salaries and differentials for specific union members, such as nurse practitioners, and nurses in certain specialty areas and/or with specific education levels. Both sides have worked on contract language changes relating to workplace violence prevention, disaster relief leave, nurse practice councils, floating assignments, safe patient handling and posting and filling vacancies, the mayor's office said.

"Nurses are vital to the health and well-being of our city," Mr. de Blasio said in the news release. "With our agreement with the New York State Nurses Association, we're paying a fair wage and addressing longstanding issues of recruitment and retention to ensure these nurses have the support they need to continue to provide excellent care to all New Yorkers."

Jill Furillo, RN, union executive director, praised the agreement, saying it "supports nurses and patients and the many communities we serve."

The labor deal is retroactive to June 6, and expires on March 2, 2023.
