UNMH workers walk out of negotiations

A bargaining session for some 4,000 healthcare personnel at University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque ended in a walkout Friday, according to an Albuquerque Journal report.

The walkout, by the bargaining team of District 1199 New Mexico of the National Union of Hospital and Health Care Employees at University of New Mexico Hospitals, was prompted by hospital officials' refusal to consider a freeze on out-of-pocket costs for employee health insurance, a union leader said, according to the report. The union represents hospital nurses, pharmacists, technicians and housekeepers.

The workers' current contract expires June 30, and the union expects the employees will work under the terms of the existing contract until a new one is reached.

UNMH declined to comment about ongoing contract negotiations.
