Kent Hospital, nurses union reach agreement

Kent Hospital in Warwick, R.I., part of Providence, R.I.-based Care New England, reached an agreement with the United Nurses and Allied Professionals Sunday.

The agreement includes a first contract for 400 newly unionized employees and an extended contract for 800 additional employees, both parties said via a joint news release.

Union and hospital officials pointed to multiple issues involved with the negotiations, such as "bringing the newly organized employees pay and benefits up to the level of already-organized employees" and "a contract extension, providing employees with security and stability while Care New England seeks to establish an organizational partner for the future."

They said the contract for the newly unionized employees largely includes the same pay benefit structure for all employees, while the contract extension includes a one-year wage freeze next year with wage increases the two following years.

The contracts won't expire until at least June 30, 2020.
