Hospitals and unions: 12 recent conflicts, agreements

Becker's Hospital Review reported on the following events related to hospital-union relationships — including rallies, strikes and contracts — since Oct. 10.

1. Union seeks injunction to halt Essentia Health's mandatory flu shot policy
Some employees at Duluth, Minn.-based Essentia Health are challenging the system's mandatory flu shot policy, according to a KSTP-TV report.

2. UPHS-Marquette nurses file labor charge
The Michigan Nurses Association filed a charge with the National Labor Relations Board against Upper Peninsula Health System-Marquette (Mich.).

3. Berkshire Medical Center nurses to rally Oct. 24
The Massachusetts Nurses Association, which represents nurses at Pittsfield, Mass.-based Berkshire Medical Center, scheduled a rally for Oct. 24 amid contract negotiations.

4. Tufts nurses to picket Nov. 2 after unsuccessful post-strike negotiations
The Massachusetts Nurses Association, which represents 1,200 nurses at Boston-based Tufts Medical Center, notified the hospital it will hold an informational picket from Nov. 2.

5. Maryland hospital, SEIU join forces to create apprenticeship program
An apprenticeship program is in the works at University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus in Baltimore. The hospital and 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, the union representing healthcare workers, are collaborating on the initiative.

6. California county to file complaint over alleged sickout at Ventura County Medical Center
Ventura County in California said it will file a complaint against Service Employees International Union Local 721 over an alleged sickout that forced two of its hospitals to cancel 20 elective surgeries, according to a Ventura County Star report.

7. First Hospital Wyoming Valley workers plan strike in Pennsylvania
Workers at First Hospital of Wyoming Valley, a psychiatric facility in Kingston, Pa., announced plans to strike "to fight for safe working conditions for healthcare workers and their patients and better care."

8. Workers rally outside Utah VA hospital, call on agency to fill staffing vacancies
Unionized workers rallied outside Salt Lake City-based George E. Wahlen Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center over staffing, according to The Salt Lake Tribune.

9. Providence St. John's Health Center workers picket over staffing, patient care
Healthcare workers at Santa Monica, Calif.-based Providence Saint John's Health Center and their supporters protested over what they deem as understaffing at the hospital.

10. Allina nurses seek federal mediator 1 year after ending strike
The Minnesota Nurses Association filed a complaint against Minneapolis-based Allina Health, alleging the system has not lived up to a provision in the contract that ended a 37-day nurse strike last year, according to the Star Tribune.

11. UPHS-Marquette nurses return to work following 'lock out' allegations
Upper Peninsula Health System-Marquette (Mich.) nurses returned to work after ending their two-day strike Oct. 7, according to FOXUP-6 News.

12. Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge extends contract with union
Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge (Tenn.) and the Service Employees International Union Local 205 agreed on a contract extension, according to The Oak Ridger.
