Hospitals and unions: 10 recent conflicts, agreements

Becker's Hospital Review reported on the following events related to hospital-union relationships — including rallies, strikes, elections and contracts — since Sept. 18.

1. University of Rochester reaches tentative labor deal with unions
The University of Rochester (N.Y.) has reached a tentative labor deal with two Service Employees International Union groups that represent healthcare service workers.

2. Judge rules against Berkshire Medical Center in court battle over planned nurse strike
Pittsfield, Mass.-based Berkshire Medical Center lost its court battle to avert a planned Oct. 3 nurse strike.

3. Brigham and Women's mandatory flu shot policy prompts nursing suit: 7 things to know
A union representing nurses at Boston-based Brigham and Women's Hospital is standing up against the facility's new policy mandating flu vaccines for employees.

4. UPHS-Marquette nurses plan October strike
Nurses at Upper Peninsula Health System-Marquette (Mich.) plan to strike Oct. 5-6.

5. Teamsters union members to rally in Fairmont over Mayo's planned nursing home closure
Teamsters union members at Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont, Minn., announced plans to rally over Mayo's plans to close Lutz Wing, its 40-bed skilled nursing home in Fairmont.

6. Mercy Home Care workers decide to unionize
Forty-seven registered nurses and healthcare professionals at West Springfield, Mass.-based Mercy Home Care voted to join the Massachusetts Nurses Association.

7. Nurses protest at more than 20 Kaiser locations over staffing
Registered nurses and nurse practitioners protested at more than 20 Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente medical centers across the state over what they deem as inadequate staffing.

8. Tufts nurses delay scheduled negotiating session to evaluate latest contract offer
The Massachusetts Nurses Association and Boston-based Tufts Medical Center agreed to reschedule negotiations for Oct. 4 and Oct. 5 so the union can further evaluate the hospital's latest contract offer.

9. PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center workers ratify first labor deal
Healthcare workers at Vancouver, Wash.-based PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center nearly unanimously ratified their first contract agreement following months of negotiations.

10. Penn Highlands DuBois nurses vote against unionizing
Nurses at Penn Highlands DuBois (Pa.) voted against joining the Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied Professionals.
